BMW 5 SERIES SALOON REVIEW

Posted by We Loved Car

BMW 5 Series is an executive car, and I am convinced that everyone wants to have. It has been around for over 40 years and see from all comers, especially the Audi A6, Mercedes E-Class and Jaguar XF but BMW is still the champion. The secret is a mixture of great quality, namely: body sporty, supple suspension, powerful yet efficient engine, spacious cabin, excellent build quality and aspirational image.

It is never quite adequate as standard, but these days even the base model SE comes loaded with kit. Of course, all of this comes at a price and 5 Series car is not cheap. However, it will not make worry most consumers, who tend to be business users with a keen eye on their annual tax bill.

Star line-up is the 520d engine diesel, which can go from 0-62mph in just 7.9 seconds, but now returned 65.7mpg and costs just £ 30 per year for taxes. 518d is less strong and takes 9.5 seconds to go from 0-62mph, but returns the economical figures of fuel and CO2 emissions are the same. For this reason, and because it was only about £ 1,500 cheaper than the 520d, 518d does not seem worth bothering with.

From the comparison, the petrol 520i (which surprisingly, cost more than 520d) only requires an economical rate of 44.1mpg and will set you back £ 145 a year in road tax. All that and it's still just as fast from 0-62mph as diesel.

Lovers of smooth six-cylinder BMW engine was still served with either higher range of engines with diesel and petrol 535i 530d. Higher still sitting 550i V8 engine and on top of that, supercar-bait M5.

Fortunately, this model does not have a monopoly on driving pleasure. All versions of the Series 5 great to drive, with full direct steering feel, chassis, rear-wheel-drive sporty, powerful brakes and high speed handling is very good. They also will take you along the highway all day in total comfort.

Recently tweaked BMW 5 Series trim level so that there are now only three versions: SE, Luxury and M Sport. SE is well equipped so it is difficult to make a case for others. Highlights include sat nav, leather trim and a DAB digital radio. Luxury trim adds larger wheels and more intelligent detailing, while the M Sport went all-out with the sporty add-ons and firmer suspension (thankfully you can choose softer eyes of the SE as a no cost option).

5 Series was awarded the maximum five-star Euro NCAP safety rating, but if you have any doubts, you can take comfort from the fact that he also has a suite of advanced braking, traction and cornering system and hill-start assistance, as well as front and rear parking sensors.
